The Science Years, an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) together with Science in Dialogue (WiD), are inviting citizens to engage in a year-long dialogue about freedom, and how to defend freedom. A concept that has taken on heightened significance in light of the 75th anniversary of the German Basic Law and the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this year.
Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger emphasised the importance of this year’s Science Year, stating, “Freedom is not an automatic right, nor is it always a given. We must constantly defend and protect it, as threats to freedom persist. This year’s Science Year is an opportunity to engage in vigorous debate about the meaning and value of freedom, and to ensure that it remains a cornerstone of our society.”
The German Basic Law, adopted in 1949, enshrined the principles of democracy, freedom, and human dignity, providing a foundation for the country’s post-war reconstruction and reunification. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolised the triumph of these principles over division and oppression.

A Call to Defend Freedom
This Science Year encourages open and thoughtful discussions about freedom, exploring its various dimensions, including personal freedoms, political freedoms, and the freedoms of expression, association, and the press. The initiative aims to foster informed understanding and encourage active engagement in upholding these freedoms.
“We want to encourage people to engage in challenging conversations about freedom,” said Stark-Watzinger. “Debate is the lifeblood of a democracy, and we must remain open to diverse perspectives and maintain respect for one another even in the face of disagreement.”
To support this year’s Science Year, a broad-based board of trustees from the fields of education, science, and media has been established. This diverse group of experts will provide guidance and expertise throughout the initiative.
The Science Year 2024 is an invitation to engage in a critical examination of freedom, to appreciate its fragility, and to actively contribute to its preservation. By fostering informed dialogue and upholding the principles enshrined in the German Basic Law, we can ensure that freedom remains a defining characteristic of our society.
