The European Commission today announced the launch of the 2025 European Capital of Smart Tourism and European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competitions. These initiatives seek to recognize and reward cities across Europe that are spearheading innovative and sustainable tourism practices.
Cities are encouraged to showcase their use of technology, commitment to accessibility, and support for local industries. Winners will be announced in November 2024 and receive promotional support, including a video, hashtag sculpture, and extensive visibility campaigns.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism is open to cities with populations over 100,000, while the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism focuses on cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000. Both competitions are open to EU and eligible non-EU countries.
The 2025 European Capital of Smart Tourism is the sixth edition of the competition. Dublin was selected as the 2024 Smart Capital, Pafos and Seville 2023, Bordeaux and València 2022, Gothenburg and Málag 2020, while Helsinki and Lyon 2019.
